FutureGen heads for the exits
The Bush administration’s long-touted FutureGen coal
initiative this week took a giant step toward Neverland.
Energy Secretary Sam Bodman told lawmakers Tuesday that the
administration is wobbling on future funding for the $1.8
billion, 275-MW integrated gasification, combined-cycle
plant that would also demonstrate carbon capture and
sequestration.
NRC worried about gas bubbles in reactor pipes
Spurred by the recent discovery of gas bubbles in key
cooling water pipes at a Kansas reactor—and the “steady
accumulation” of similar problems at other plants—the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission has asked all U.S. commercial
nuclear operators to detail how they curb those problems as
the NRC mulls “more action” on the matter.
Protecting plant equipment from voltage sags
Immunity from voltage sags is vital for reliable operation
of our ever-more-sophisticated electronic controls and
equipment. Every electrical product should be able to ride
through typical voltage sags, but in many cases the first
sag test occurs after equipment is installed and in
operation. Select the appropriate sag immunity specification
and equipment compliance testing, and you’ll be glad you
did.
Coal group pushes for investment in carbon capture
technology
Armed with a bigger budget, National Mining Association
(NMA) lobbyists are working to build support in Congress for
amendments to Senate climate change legislation to add
funding that would speed the development of technology to
capture and store carbon dioxide from coal-fired power
plants. The funds would also be used to delay a nationwide
cap on emissions until the technology is ready to be
deployed, according to officials with the trade group.
